Visit the Moroccan Art Museum to enjoy a variety of handicrafts. Before noon, take the road back to Fez.
Our carefully planned day trip ensures you experience the highlights of all three destinations at a comfortable pace, with private transportation and expert guidance.
Your adventure begins at 8:00 AM when our professional driver-guide picks you up directly from your hotel or riad in Fez. As we leave the city behind, we travel west through the fertile agricultural plains of northern Morocco. The scenic drive takes approximately one hour, giving you time to relax and enjoy the changing landscapes of olive groves and wheat fields.
Our first stop is the archaeological site of Volubilis, the ancient capital of the Roman-Berber kingdom of Mauritania. This exceptionally well-preserved example of a large Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Empire was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
As you walk through the ruins dating back more than 2,000 years, you’ll discover the remains of a prosperous Roman city. The site is famous for its stunningly preserved mosaic floors, still visible in their original locations. Highlights include:
The House of Orpheus: Named for its magnificent mosaic depicting Orpheus charming animals with his music
The Basilica and Capitoline Temple: The civic heart of the Roman city
The Triumphal Arch: Built in honor of Emperor Caracalla in 217 AD
The Decumanus Maximus: The main colonnaded street lined with shops and houses
Your guide will bring the ruins to life with stories of the wealthy merchants, Roman administrators, and Berber chieftains who once walked these streets. The site’s elevated position offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making it easy to understand why the Romans chose this location.
A short drive from Volubilis brings us to the hilltop town of Moulay Idriss, one of Morocco’s holiest cities. This is the town where Moulay Idriss I arrived in 789 AD, introducing Islam to Morocco and founding the Idrisid dynasty that would rule much of the country.
Moulay Idriss is considered so sacred that until recently, non-Muslims were not permitted to stay overnight. Today, visitors are welcome to explore the town’s narrow, winding streets and experience its spiritual atmosphere. From viewpoints around the town, you’ll see the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, its green-tiled roof gleaming in the sun. The town’s position on two rocky outcrops creates a dramatic setting that has inspired travelers for centuries.
Take time to stroll through the whitewashed streets, observe daily life, and absorb the peaceful ambiance of this deeply spiritual place.
Continuing our journey, we arrive in Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Founded by the Almoravids in the 11th century as a military camp, Meknes reached its golden age under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, who made it his capital and transformed it into a magnificent city of Spanish-Moorish style.
Step into the medina and discover some of the ancient city gates, including the monumental Bab Mansour, widely considered the most beautiful gate in Morocco. Completed in 1732, its intricate zellij tilework and massive scale reflect the power and ambition of Moulay Ismail’s reign.
While touring the city walls, we stop by the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, one of the few religious buildings in Morocco open to non-Muslims. The serene courtyards and exquisite decoration offer insight into the artistry of the period. You can also visit the Moulay Ismail Museum (formerly the Dar Jamaï Museum) to enjoy a variety of Moroccan handicrafts, including ceramics, woodwork, and jewelry.
Before heading back, you’ll have free time for lunch in Meknes. The city is known for its excellent olives and fresh produce, and local restaurants offer delicious traditional Moroccan cuisine at reasonable prices.
In the late afternoon, we take the road back to Fez. The return journey takes approximately one hour, and we will drop you off at your accommodation in the early evening. You’ll return with a deeper appreciation of Morocco’s rich history, stunning photographs, and memories of an unforgettable day.
